Sales and Use Tax

State sales tax collection is an unfortunate but necessary part of doing business. When a business collects Sales & Use Tax, it is acting as a custodial of money that belongs to the state. Therefore, it is critical to treat this money separately and to ensure that you can pay your Sales & Use Tax liability. An important fact is that Sales & Use Tax dollars collected do not really belong to business owners. They are state dollars in the hands of businesses. Registering with each state individually, filling out redundant forms and spending hours online are NOT the best ways to spend your time. Although Sales & Use Tax dollars are so important to states, their websites are still antiquated and filled with complex jargon. If you sell to customers in states where you must collect Sales & Use Tax, having your registration in place can make compliance easier, ensure a smoother process and save you from future headaches. We can handle your registration, so that you can stay compliant with the state and focus your attention on the important things like running your business.

Responsible Person Explained

Each state has a slightly different definition of a responsible person. A responsible person is generally an important member of a business who is responsible for paying Sales & Use Tax when the business does not. Examples of responsible person(s) include owners, managers, people with check signing authority, etc. State rules determine who the responsible person is, so if you fit your state's description of responsible person, it is important to register as one with the state. Businesses can and do have more than one responsible person.

It is critical to understand duties as a responsible person since states are adamant about collecting money owed to them. An in-depth description of Responsible Person rules is available Here.
